I also saw this caterpillar yesterday 2nd August 2011 crawling on a forest track near Slieve Kimalta in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is about 7 cm long. Anyone know what it is? Attachments:

Thanks, both of the above suggestions make sense given the location where found, coniferous forest beside open heathland containing heather, a known food plant of Pavonia pavonia. So that is probably what it is. Haven't seen the larvae before. Any ideas what the larva in the other thread I posted is?

Definitely pavonia, whichever genus it is in these days! The Emperor moth as we Brits call it.
