I believe that this topic has been discussed before on the old forum, but I thought that I'd share a couple of interesting misrepresentations of insects I've noticed recently. The first was a blue morpho used in an advertisement for printer ink. At first glance it looked normal but it quickly became apparent that it had been "touched-up". The picture was a side view and apparently the add-execs had decided that the outside of the morpho's wings looked best when they were the same metallic blue as the inside of the wings. The second was a picture of a monarch (possibly viceroy, I saw this one at a distance) on the van of a lawn care service. It was completely normal except for the back edges of the hind wings which had been edited out and replaced with those of a swallowtail, complete with tails. Anyhow, I found both of these fairly amusing, though somewhat disconcerting considering that Joe person accepts these pictures at face value not knowing any better and probably never know any better. Any other interesting tails of pop-culture insect depictions?

I run a series on my blog called "Genius of the Press" - where I highlight some horrible portrayal of insects in the news. skepticalmoth.southernfriedscience.com/?s=geniusThis is one of my favorite - a billboard I photographed in San Francisco (cruddy camera phone photo) You can't read the caption from here, but it's says something along the lines of "a place so magical they migrate 3000 miles to get here each year"

Last week I have seen a sheet with ca. two dozens butterfly stickers for kids. I think they were all imaginary. Very strange, as there are enough colorful butterflies to take some real ones to make stickers.
Is there a copyright on real butterflies? ;D

Entoman, I know which exactly the printer ink you're talking about.
Yes, imaginary butterflies are a strange thing. Usually swallowtail-resembling, coloured pink, purple or blue.

Greetings,
I agree that most images of insects in the media are pretty absurd, but occasionally there is a good one. My favorite is the Coca-Cola "heist" commercial from last year's Super Bowl. Probably the most morphologically correct (new term for us? MC instead of PC?) but obviously computer-generated imagery of insects I've seen. Now, as far as behavior goes, I doubt Dynastes tityus often opens bottles of Coke for people, but if they could, I'd keep one in the kitchen drawer! Check out the link below...
Cheers! Bandrow

I hadn't seen that commercial before. Very well done. My hat is off to the Coca-Cola company.
