Thierry knows much more about African Saturniidae than I do. My first guesses as to id of this species would have been Bunaeopsis oubie or Bunaeopsis bomfordi. Pinhey indicates bomfordi and zaddachi are very similar in outward appearance, but bomfordi is reported to be considerably larger. I do not know the characters that would distinguish one of those species from the other, besides size and geography, with some overlap of the latter. Other images I have of zaddachi show an am line which is much more angulate.

surely not oubie that is very distinct in wings shape, color and venation (also the location, only Ethiopia and ?? Erythrea). For bomfordi It is a more blakish and rounded species. As Bunaeopsis are very much variable, I can't be sure about the real identity of it. Thre are so few few known specimens (I don't have it myself ) Thierry

I agree with Thierry... It is not the'Abyssinian' oubie in my opinion. My first bet would be zaddachi as far as the forewing is concerned, but the pictured hindwing is not unlike description of bomfordi. I have a female zaddachi which I caught in Zambia in 1972. I have just resurrected it and put it in the humidifier for a re-set. A photograph will eventually appear on this post... It's not an easy straightforward problem with so many local forms and varieties occurring in this group, but I am about 80-90% convinced that this is a male Bunaeopsis zaddachi... Barry

yes Barry, in Kenya it is probably the true jacksoni ! This group need to be revised as there are probably more species involved. Thierry
