Could any one tell me if they've seen any recent Odontolabis ritsemae from Cameron Highlands in W. Malaysia? The last time I've came across one and that was in 2002 and never seen another specimen since then. I was told by the dealer the area where're from it's already gone. It was only from a very small area and they were found on bamboo new growth. If this is ture, O. ritsemae might be extinct now. It was never common anyway and I've never seen any live specimens available from Japan. Can any one confirm about this or seen a more recent specimen later than 2002? Thanks Raymond Attachments:

Raymond,
Sorry...can't help you with O. ritsemae, but just curious & wanted to ask, as you seem to have so many large stags,... what is the longest stag beetle sp./ssp. you have? I just mounted up a 110mm Prosopocoilus giraffa "keisukei?" from Flores Is. & it is quite impressive...I'm sure there must be some truly huge sp./ssp. out there even larger than that??

Hey John,
Prosopocoilus giraffa keisukei is the largest Lucanidae sp and ssp in the world. It can reach 128mm follows by Hexarthrius mandibularis sumatranus 118mm.

Raymond, I think the last time I have seen them must have been around 2003 in Malaysia, when I saw a living pair at one of these butterfly farms. I am also investigating right now with some Malaysian friends to see whether this beetle is still available.
Tried breeding it somewhen around 2001, but did not succeed that time.
On my list for breeding now :-) That is, if it's not too late already :-0 Cheers Ben

Ben Thanks for letting me know. Don't worry, no one has this sp for sell any more in Malaysia. I think it's already too late, if you haven't got one. Raymond

Raymond,
I have a good sized pair, so that is taken care of. However, I think they are still available in the wild. I am just checking with some friends and will let you know :-)

I hope for the species sake it is still hanging on, why do you say it's extinct? just because a dealer told you? it takes a long time and justification to say for sure that a species has disappeared. I wonder is it the WWF that declares a species' extinction? I'd say its probably locally extinct and unlikely that it has been wiped out altogether, unless all its habitat has been destroyed

I said might be extinct, not it's extinct? because I never saw another specimen since the habitat where they were from has been destroyed.

I got these with pretty bad data, they seem old, no date on them... Attachments:
