My brother gave me this beetle encased in resin for Christmas but he forgot to get the name of it, so I am left with trying to figure out what it is. It has shiny red/orange back and black and silver accents. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Cheers all! Attachments:

Greetings,
Your specimen looks like a species of Dicranocephalus, but which one I can't say - somebody more versed in Asian scarabs might be able to get a better name. I suspect the color is a bit off from being embedded in resin - fresh specimens of Dicranocephalus are generally greenish-gray to gray to an off-white, with a distinct pruinosity (velvety) look about them. The silvery accents could be due to air bubbles trapped on the specimen's body during the embedding process.

It's Dicranocephalus yui Kurasawa, 1968. This is one of two dark brown species that were described. Jeff Prill

looks really quite similar with Dicranocephalus yui.
Dicranocephalus wallichi exist several subsp. in China, the colour and shapes differ from the origions, this sp. is a wide distribution sp. in China, and in Thailand also exist.
the smaller horn Dicranocephalus wallichi(Sichuan prov. China) does exist dark form. but the colour of thorax is not that dark, also the elytra shape seems some differences,as i've already emptyed all of D.wallichi stock so i can't use the previous specimen to compare. just in memeory,a little bit close.
but i think using Dicranocephalus yui to make resin is really a waste of specimen. this sp. together with D.uenoi,D.shimomurai are not common sp. narrowlly distribute in Taiwan only, not be found in other places.
hope this info. helps!
