I saw this the other day. What will they think of next? Just something else to escape into the wild & run amuck!

Saw another article that some scientist had created a new strain of the avian (bird) flu, which is usually about 50% fatal. His new strain can be spread through the air, rather than direct contact. I don't know what they are thinking when they come up with these gems! All I can say is "Here's your sign!" to borrow a comedian's catch phrase.

Actually, it sounds like these ants are produced by the application of hormones; without the hormones they'd be normal ants. Thus the only way they could begin to occur outside of laboratories would be for scientists to start spraying wild nests with the hormones. And then they'd probably have to reapply the hormone again within a year anyway. The only way this could become a serious ecological menace would be if the geneticists found a way for the ants to produce the hormone themselves. Making stronger strains of avian flu on the other hand seems completely idiotic.
