Where did it come from? I'm guessing it looks like a Hexarthrius but I don't know if they occur in New Zealand.

its not a New Zealand species, the guy i got it from said hold on to it because this is a extreme size they come in. that's why i really want to know the species, its quite a huge specimen, maybe something very valuable?!?

:0 Hexarthrius mandibularis, most probably from Sumatra and therefore, sub-species: sumatranus
Otherways H. m. mandibularis from Borneo, except this subspecies is seldom seen on the market especially at this size. So if it were to come from Borneo yes it would be very valuable and I would offer to buy it from you. otherways its currently worth about $100

Yes,definitely a male of Hexarthrius mandibularis. And as said above, it is either the ssp.sumatranus Mizunuma, 1994 from Sumatra island (maximum known length 118.5 mm), or the nominate subspecies mandibularis Deyrolle, 1881 from Kalimantan island (maximum length 115 mm). As you can compare with the given maximum sizes, you have a good size here, and thus quite valuable. If it is sumatranus (most possible) it worths about 100 usd as bichos told, if it is mandibularis about 150 usd.

Thanos, I have never seen any large H.m.mandibularis offered, certainly not over 100mm. I would think they are worth much more than $150 at 110mm...

Bichos, yes it is fact that males of the ssp.mandibularis over 100mm are very rarely offered, and possibly the price for 110mm male would be higher than 150 usd. But I have seen on some sites(for example 'Bentz's insectpage',etc) that the prices for same-sized males(up to about 100mm) are about the same for the 2 subspecies(over 100mm ssp.mandibularis is usualy not offered, while ssp.sumatranus offered up to about 110mm,but this also not oftenly at this size). So,I don't think that a 110mm m.mandibularis would have a so huge difference in price, compared with a m.sumatranus of the same big size. By the way,one big pair(with 109mm male) of m.sumatranus was sold recently on ebay for around 80 usd.

Here is my true Hexarthrius mandibularis mandibularis 100mm from Trus Madi Sabah. The inner tooth of the mandibles are slightly lower than ssp sumatranus. ;D Attachments:
