Here's a great dinner topic: There is literature reference (inc Scarabs Newsletter) that Phanaeus spp are not attracted to older human feces in pit traps. Has anyone tried, or had much succes in using frozen feces in their pit-trapping repertoire?

Actually, I've found that they come into carrion in pit fall traps. If you catch a mouse or a shrew and allow it to die, and decay, you may get a good number of Phanaus and other beetles, ie. other scarabs, Staphylinidae, Leptinidae, Staphylinidae, Carabidae, and in one very strange case, a Cerambycid. You can get similar results with any other insects that may fall into the trap and start to decay. Jeff Prill

I can`t see any difference between an older humans feces and a younger humans feces not working as well as each other Even old decomposed mushrooms work well for many sp , just take a whiff of the sample you`ll see what I mean You may get a better response from some people when you tell them I have some mushroom baits in the freezer than a bag of old human crap!

My wife gets upset at my moths in the freezer. I imagine she would divorce me if I even mentioned freezing poop! LOL

I try to change my bait every week or more often. It's a problem when I set out a feces trap while on the road and can't get back to it for a month. After a week it becomes just another pitfall. I'm wondering if anyone knows what could be added to feces bait to "extend" it. Keep it from drying out? An oil of some sort?

The consistency of the "condiment" I use is that of a runny milkshake. I've thought of adding glycerin to retard dessication, and I always cover the trap with a board. The effectiveness drops off significantly after three days.

Try a tin of catfood , fish preferably with a couple very small holes punched in the lid , it will last longer than a dead cat and smell just as ripe.

If I remember right, there was a thread on the old forum about this. I think someone suggested using vegetable oil mixed in with the poop to give it the consistency of peanut butter. Yes Mike, it has been a long winter! Lucanidae, can't get rid of the wife, she's the only one with a job at present!

Crap baits is an intersting topic , have heard some great tales from a few entos . When I started collecting beetles many years ago my old mate the late Ross Storey said human crap makes the best bait for dung beetles , I was shocked when he told me to apply the bait around the rim of the pitfall with your finger , I was never keen to try that myself and never got to find out if he was serious or not , but I`m sure he was pulling my leg. After that I set some traps with some crap tied in small muslin bags over the cups in the ground way down in the scrub from my house , later that afternoon my faithfull old Blue Cattle dog presented me with a gift hanging from his jaw that looked like a tea bag , on closer inspection I saw it was my human crap baits , I have never set another trap like that since.
