As a rule of thumb narrower wing bands denote fruhstorferi, there are also differences in the underside of the forewings but I can't remember what they are! I am not sure how accurate these are though.

Sulawesi is a specific island by the high numbers of local collectors there (due to Bantimurung butterfly trade history).
I was impressed while visiting some local collectors in remoted mountainous villages near Puncak to see that they offer specimens from the whole island (and not only from their area). Most of the time with no accurate data and saying they all come from Puncak.
So don't believe data from local sellers on Sulawesian specimens (except if they have been caught by serious entomologists you know).

Wollastoni wrote : "that they offer specimens from the whole island (and not only from their area)" That's true, mainly in Bantimurung. Nevertheless, I met some local collectors selling butterflies only from their area. For example : one guy in Ampana dealing with Peleng samples (Banggai archipelago) ; one another guy offering butterflies from Perdingan Lindu Palolo area. And the best way to be certain about the collecting data is to go on the field with these local collectors as guides. I collected both P. b. blumei and P. b. fruhstorferi in South and Central Sulawesi, but, sorry ! , I'm not presently in my home and I can't check the samples from my drawers. As far I remember, it's mainly a matter of green bands size, more or less narrow.

Thanks Gents! I also suspect that not all the specimens I have from "Bantimurung" (as an example) are REALLY from there...if I look at my series of blumei/fruhstorferi I really, really struggle to tell the difference which I suspect is due to the fact that my subspecies are mixed up... I suspect that if a dealer is asked to provide, say, 50 blumei blumei and only has 40 at hand, he'll throw in 10 fruhstorferi to "make up the numbers"....leading to my pulling my hair out trying to differentiate between the two Anyway, thanks again gents, Simon
