Those who are interested in the butterflies and insects of Oriental region must know Mr. Detani. His story is introduced in the following blog. bsj.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2012-03-20bsj.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2012-04-16As you know, he has made a great contribution to the study of butterfly fauna in Indonesia. Now he lives in Bali, exporting various tropical insects to all over the world. Cheers, Mokky

Hi Mokky, Thanks for posting - I really enjoy reading about famous collectors...I guess Mr. Detani falls into this category! Unfortunately, Google's translate function make this a bit of a "blur" but I managed, I think, to make sense of it Does anyone have contact details for Mr. Detani? Simon PS - Mokky - do you know any information on another collector, Mr. Yukio Shimogori, author of "Achillides Butterflies"?

Simon, thank you for your post.
Unfortunately I do not know Mr. Yukio Shimogori well. I think he has been earnestly collecting Achillides for a long time but several years ago he sold all the collection to another collector. I have no idea his passion for Achillides still lasts.

I have met Detani several times . He is indeed a fantastic entomologist, a stunning seller and a succesful entrepreneur. He has built an incredible network of local collectors all around Indonesia, he has himself visited most of Indonesian islands and can draw by heart the map of every Papuan paths.
He is also a nice guy, I had the pleasure to be invited to lunch at his home and to visit is live Ornithoptera house (about twenty Ornitho flying in the center of Denpasar, Bali !). Finally he is a great source of butterflies for all Western collectors as many European dealers buy him some specimens.
For those who would like to buy him butterfly, you have to go and see him in Denpasar, Bali, as he does not export butterflies.

Mokky Thanks for the information Mokky...I believe that a fellow Insectnet user, a collector of Papilonidae, bought a large part of Mr. Shimogori's collection. I guess his, Shimogori's, passion for Achillides must have passed if he was willing to sell his collection Simon

I heard that one of the famous Japanese collectors bought Shimogori's Achillides collection. In this collection, many rare species and subspecies such as Papilio elephenor are included. I hope all the specimens are still kept in good condition.

Adam. Hi Adam, No...no you! Another well known papilonidae collector on here emailed me to say he'd "bought a large part of Shimogori's collection when he sold it". I won't say who unless he wants to publicly disclose it. Anyway...like you, I wouldn't have the money to splash out on a "ready made" collection like Shimogori's...however tempting it would be Simon

Anyway...I'm sure whoever had/has the money to buy a collection like this would make sure the specimens are looked after. Simon
