Looking for advice
I have 6 to 8 crystal of the Mourning Cloak coming in and world like to try to rear a generation of them. I have experience with moths but not butterflies. Has anyone out there raised these before and what advice would you give. Their live cycle may make rearing them impractical.
Thanks

Rich, This is a very easy species to rear with no special conditions that I'm aware of. Years ago I reared about 2 dozen cats. that I found on some black willow shrubs. I reared them in a 20 gal. aquarium out side with an old screen as a lid. I feed them on cut black willow and didn't loose one. Just research for host plants that are available in your area and your good to go. Norm

Hello Norm, Once I get the eggs "ova" I think it should be easy to rear them. The trick is getting them to breed. How long after they emerge do I have to wait before they mate? How long after mating before they lay eggs? Thanks for the reply Norm Rich

This morning I release 5 of the Mourning Cloaks and keep 2. While searching the willow for ova I found two batches of ova. Now the work begins. Rich Attachments:
