Where from? I would say Lasiocampidae, Malacosoma species.

Saskatchewan, Canada. Dead center of North America.
It was on wild rose, and about 60 mm, long.

Thanks Dave, yes it must be a tent caterpillar. I guess there must be a lot of variability, as it is quite different from others that I see commonly. I may go back to that spot and look for some pupa, and see what kind of variability is in the adults.

You are welcome Tim. I know it is not a perfect match but it is the only one I found that occurs in your area. M. americana is a better match in some ways but according to the MPG it does not get to Canada. As you say, rearing the moth may provide the solution or it may just be an aberrant larva. Dave
