While thinning out Cypress Pines on our property about 15 kms west of Dubbo in NSW Australia, I found at the base of one of the trees what looked like an ants nest unlike anything I’d seen before. The ants’ activity seemed to be centered on what looked like sacks of food with the appearance of cherries, at least in colour though smaller. The food sacks, if that’s what they are, ranged in colour from pink through orange to almost black as if they were at different stages of ripeness. Just wondering if anyone out there has any idea of what is going on here. Attachments:

Difficult to tell from the picture, it is probable that the "cherry sacs"are secreating a sweet substance the ants are feeding on. As to the identity of the "sacs" they are either sap from the cypress or a secretion of some sort of invertebrate on the tree trunk like scale.

Could they be some kind of 'Honey-pot Ant'?
