Hello, I am a UK based photographer looking to photograph a Weta (preferably Giant Weta, but open to all) as part of an ongoing art project commissioned by a major gallery in New Zealand.

I am writing to see if anyone could give me information as to how I could obtain access to these species, even purchase them (either dry or alive), or if anyone has a Weta that I could possibly photograph.

While tree wetas have become readily available, the Deinacrida species are strictly protected by law and all but one of these "giant" Weta species are very difficult to get (unless you're London Zoo who have had some to breed).

The only giant Weta species that's not protected is Deinacrida connectens the Giant Scree Weta. I have just acquired a pair of dried specimens for my collection. It is not particularly big, by weta standards, but it is closely related to D. heteracantha the biggest species and quite similar morphologically.

I live in SE London, if you're interested in photographing them I would be happy to let you.
