Saw this critter at 1411 N 27th St. Mt Vernon, IL 62864 I found some pictures that indicate this is a "red velvet ant", or "cow killer", a type of flightless female wasp. Interestingly, some of the info I found indicates these species are typically found in the southwest, yet this one was seen in Southern Illinois. A friend commented that she saw a another one a few blocks down the road from the site above - so this was not a unique one. Can anyone tell me if it is common for these insects to be found in Southern Illinois? Jawaid Attachments:

Cow killer (dasymutilla occidentalis, pictured above) is common but not prevalent in great numbers in Northern latitudes. I've seen them a few times living in Ohio.
Red velvet-ant (dasymutilla magnifica) is generally confined to Southwestern states.

Yes, they can be found in Illinois. I grew up in central Illinois & only ran across one or two. Never did see a male, which has wings & flies. Although I've never experience the sting, I've heard & read that it is quite painful.

I managed to find a male and female pair once down here in Florida that I believe were about to mate (the male was circling the general area in which the female was located). I felt a little bad about collecting them just before that, but I had never seen a male either. Very interesting insects. Very menacing looking stinger as well.
