this "tiny" (1 inch) wasp was caught near west chester PA (actually, it was fished out of a pool into a urine specimen collection jar - they come in handy, but dont ask). Despite the size, the markings seem to match cicada killers. I just read that the males are much smaller than the females, but at this property i only saw wasps this size (and there was clear ground wasp activity on the lawn). I've never seen a male, only females. From what I can tell, it looks like a cicada killer (Sphecius speciosus) to me.
