number 2 : Issoria lathonia Linnaeus, 1758, two females (upperside). number 3 : Pontia daplidice Linnaeus, 1758, female. number 5 : Leptidea sinapis L., 1758 or, better since the sample is from Catalunya, Leptidea reali Reissinger, 1989 (the two species have same appearance but the black apex dot is darker in L. reali). number 6 is a Sesiidae. On this webpage : r.a.r.e.free.fr/sesiidae/sesie20.htmsome Sesiidae from South of France (near Catalunya border). Your sample seems to be (as far it's possible to identify from a poor photo) : Chamaesphecia empiformis (Esper, 1783) Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's belongs to Chamaesphecia genus.

number 12 :
Triaena psi Linnaeus, 1758 or Triaena tridens Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775.
Imagos are same ; identification between the two sp. made by genitalia or looking at caterpillars. T. psi is more common along streams and T. tridens is more a forest dweller.
See Guide des papillons nocturnes de France, page 112, numbers 1018 and 1019.

Thank you all. Sorry about the poor picture of No. 6, I will post a better one. In the middle of the abdomen there is a red stripe around the abdomen, so it could not be one of the Chamaesphecia pictured at the link above. The wings of my specimen are strongly rubbed, so the original colour can't be seen.

Here now a better picture of No. 6. Please note, that the wings are strongly rubbed. Before this happened, the dark margins at forewings and hindwings were black, not brown as it looks like now. At the top margin of the left forewing can be seen the original scales. There was no brown. Hannes Attachments:

Can anybody explain me the differences between the males and females of Issoria lathonia?
