I bought this as Syntherata apicalis, but I have my doubts. It is listed as having come from China and is 81mm. Your help is appreciated. Attachments:

Bill: Go to BoldSystems.org/idex.php/taxbrowser_taxonpage?taxid=... I don't think that it is that species. The apices of the forewings and the markings don't match. There are pictures of it on the website. Plus the species range is the peninsula of Irian Jaya. You have been ripped off. Another reason why I don't buy insects on-line, anymore. Jeff Prill

Actually, it looks like a male Opodipthera venuta. Again, that would place the moth in the mountains of Papua New Guinea. Unless, the insect was raised in China, your data is wrong and again you've been ripped off. Jeff Prill

Bill, I am pretty sure it is one of the Neodiphthera, and it would not be from China. It is close to N. aruensis and N. ceramensis. I am pretty sure it is not N. venusta (as per Stephan Naumann image on WLSS), which used to be Opodiphthera venusta. Bill Oehlke I can ask some others for an opinion and get back to you, but it did not originate in China.

Bill, thanks for the ID narrowing. I went to your site and agree it appears to be one of those.
Jeff, yes....perhaps I bought a mis-marked moth, but the price was good and now I might find out what it is. Even though the data was wrong as I suspected, I get far more good or great stuff from the Internet than poorly IDed ones. If I am in doubt with an expensive moth, I'll look into it prior to purchasing. I was not ripped off (I think) and....if I went back to the seller with proof of data error, I believe I would be compensated. This seller has done good by me. I surely don't feel there was an intent to rip me off.

Bill, I am pretty sure it is Neodiphthera foucheri from Indonesia or Papua New Guinea. I also believe it is one of the more common Neodiphthera from that area, based on specimens in Ron Brechlin collection. Very nice specimen. I will post to WLSS as N. foucheri, tentatively, unless I find a better match. Bill Oehlke
