2012.08.14 Mad Creek, Steamboat Springs, CO
After arriving in Steamboat I went on this great canyon hike with lots of Gambel’s Oak leading to a scrub opening about two miles from the trailhead.
Colias philodice
Hypaurotis crysalus
Speyeria zerene
Speyeria egleis (very worn)
Seyeria mormonia
Phyciodes campestris
Nymphalis antiopa
2012.08.15 Fish Creek Falls, Steamboat Springs, CO
Molly and I went on a great hike about a quarter mile to the lower falls and then continued on two more miles to the upper falls. I would love to do the five miles to Long Lake, but that will have to wait for another time.
Pontia occidentalis
Colias philodice
Lycaena arota
Speyeria zerene
Nymphalis antiopa
Polygonia gracilis
Two days later I hiked the entire 5.5 mile trail to Long Lake. Above the upper falls I encountered most of what was spotted below the upper falls and added the following:
Speyeria hydaspe
Boloria bellona
Lycaeides melissa
2012.08.15 (afternoon) Ferndale picnic area, Steamboat Springs, CO
Came back to the picnic area after having poked around in the morning a few days prior. Was very glad I returned as I spotted and caught my first Hemileuca eglanterina. I had no idea that the species occurred in Colorado.
Pontia occidentalis
Pieris marginalis
Colias philodice
Polygonia gracilis
Nympahlis antiopa
Speyeria egleis
Speyeria zerene
Speyeria mormonia
Hemileuca eglanterina
2012.08.16 Dunkley Flat Tops, Rio Blanco Co., CO
This looked like such a unique habitat from the resources I had used to search for hikes that I was rather excited to reach the plateau. I managed to find a horse trail that went straight to the top of the plateau and spent a few hours exploring. Nothing stood out as unique to the area.
Pontia occidentalis
Pieris marginalis
Colias philodice
Polygonia gracilis
Speyeria zerene
Speyeria mormonia
Boloria sp. (probably bellona as I spotted it near Long lake. Although the purplish fritillary was rather common at Rabbit Ear’s Pass around the same time last summer)
