Well I must be one of the luckiest collectors in Europe. It appears that I have managed to see, in numbers; many rare, very rare and in one case extinct butterflies. That's if the ebay description given by this idiot is to be believed.
see ebay item number 110965615305 and look for other items.

It seems that this guy is probably good with Mexican leps, but totally inexperienced with European ones, so you see many common species like Lycaena tityrus, L. alciphron, Neohipparchia statilinus, Limenitis reducta, Melanargia galathea, Lasiommata maera, Pararge aegeria, Erebia medusa, etc, listed as rare, very rare, or even extinct . Or..,he just puts the label very rare next to everything.

Well it may be rare there.
Thanos says N. statilinus is a common bug. Maybe in Greece but in N. France, it has nearly totally disappeared and there are only small colonies in Fontainebleau (protected there). I would accept to pay a big sum for a legal one from this area.

On that premise I would have to list every butterfly in the world as rare because here in northern England all species are rare there are hardly any left.

Peter /ebay seller/ probably speaking about situation in Slovakia where Euphydryas aurinia is very probably extinct. About 10 years ago I intensivelly searched for it for 2 years without any success and do not hear about anybody with fresh specimens. This species was extremelly localised and unfortunately it is one of rare example of extinct by collectors. Localities were secure as were inside closed "military zone" and nothing changed there. Only aurinia is gone.
Right words should be "probably extinct in Slovakia".
Over-use of "rare", "very rare", etc. nowdays is horrible , but it is seller choice.

Ok, only for N. statilinus I maybe take it back. Tom Tolman's book states on its distribution:
Common and widespread in: Portugal, Spain, SE France, C & S Italy, S Balkans and Greece (here I can confirm that it is a very widespread and common species).
Very local and sporadic in: SW & C France, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
Possibly extinct in: Germany.
His specimens are from Slovakia, where it is generally sporadic.
But all the other species he is offering as very rare and I mentioned above, are common to very common at almost every place they occur and widespread. L. alciphron melibaeus that he has listed as very rare for example, this is absolutely not true, as this exact subspecies occurs here in Greece and is very common and widespread, as is in Bulgaria, too.
Euphydryas a. aurinia here is very local but very common, too.

Does the bidder on the item below think that he's really bidding on a FEMALE This is definitely a male, I contacted the seller about this some days ago, but I only got his ignorance..And I don't like to be ignored...,when I help and point out the truth !!! And he posted no correction on his listing as you can see.. www.ebay.com/itm/PARNASSIUS-APOLLO-RHODOPENSIS-FEMALE-VERY-RARE-GREECE-MT-RHODOPI-/281000019193?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item416ce804f976 usd for a MALE of rhodopensis.. Just 'LOL' like the title of this thread says. I see many each time I visit Rhodopi..The FEMALE of this ssp. is hard to find. Oh, and still no answer by the seller. Update: I sent a second message about this to the seller, and he replied to me that he just put a photo of a male, but actually sold female (however, in the description he states: 'photo is actual specimen'..). Then, a funny thing happened to me: I looked carefully at the specimen, and recognised it...! This exact specimen was actually mine, and I had sold it to a collector a long time ago (and the seller 'goliath*2010' just told me that that collector is his friend and that he received the specimen from him). And here is my original photo that I found on my computer, so to convince you all.. . And firstly I was wandering who other has found this ssp. in Greece (until now I hadn't seen someone else offering it except for me). I have made some successful trading with him, but this thing was a bit strange.

And here the photo (of course I had sold it as a male to his friend, and also I never sold a female to his friend or to him - I have only sold 1 fem. of this ssp. in my life (from the only 3 I've found during many years) and this to another person). Another update: he just told me that he received a female from another of his friends (maybe the other person that I sold the female is also his friend) . Anyway, a funny story ! Attachments:

I find it funny that there are some dealers on there that have very common species, like the Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) or Dynastes tityus, yet they are very rare and ask for a ridiculous price.
