These are from the Pic Boby area of Madagascar. The pale markings on the elytra are from clay highlighting the shallow sculpturing. They are about 20 mm in length, and they are rather low profile, depressed. They were under rocks and were mistaken for Tenebs in the field. Anyone recognize them? Rick Attachments:

These look a lot like the genus Hexodon - could be a species of that or something close.

I found a photograph of a similar Scarab on one website, but there was no identification except that it was called a dung beetle. One possibility is to download the Scarabaeidae volumes of Faune de Madagascar. Of course, you will have to use keys to identify it. Jeff Prill
