HAHAHA unbelievable!!! THREE skint countries that could bring down the eurozone are blowing £338million on a trip to MARS. Basket-case Italy will shell out a staggering £278million on the project. Riot-hit Spain — teetering on the edge of financial ruin — has earmarked £58.3million. And bailed-out Portugal — second only to Greece as the “sick man of Europe” — is spending £2.1million on the trip. All three are members of the 19-nation European Space Agency — the EU’s answer to Nasa — which has “budgeted” £850million for the mission to send a rocket to the Red Planet by 2016. Spain and Portugal have also joined Germany to “fund studies” of a possible Moon landing in 2018. Britain has already contributed £165million to the Mars project, and science minister David Willetts has told MPs: “Some increased financial support may be provided.” Yet Germany, the richest country in the EU, is stumping up just £89million. Last night UKIP leader Nigel Farage blasted the waste of money. He said: “These countries who have been bailed out by hard-working British taxpayers would be better off using any money here on Earth, sorting out their economies and encouraging small businesses. “The EU are constantly trying to compete with the US, even if it makes no economic sense. “This is another example of a vanity project wasting money in countries which have none to spare.” Read more: www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/politics/4650879/Euro-lunartics-blow-338m-on-Mars-trip.html#ixzz2CoF6J3nD

I agree! Today, France got downgraded by Moodys...that is what happens when you elect a Socialist Govt. The UK is doing better now with Cameron, ditto for Germany under Conservative governments. A lot of Europe's financial mess, was as a result of the, "Green Energy" debacle, the wind, solar experiments were an utter failure. Plus billions of euros were sent too polluters like China, Russia, India in carbon credits, resulting in high unemployment in European nations. Also look at the cost of the CERN project in Switzerland. Governments have a bad habit of inventing crazy ways too spend taxpayers hard earned money John

As with all conservative governments, they rob the poor to feed the rich.

True that this Mars project is stupid... About Moodys downgrading, they should have done it 10 years ago... there's no news here... and French loaning rates have never been so low so no problem. John , the debt in France has been created by conservative governments (Chirac, Sarkozy) and mainly to save stupid banks ... not by socialist governments at all. Sometimes life is more complicated than great conservatives and devil socialists/ecologists...

As with all conservative governments, they rob the poor to feed the rich. The German Federal states which have an healthy economy, few jobless persons, the best education, the highest rate of well-being of their population (reffered to polls) and so on are those, who have a conservative government mostly for decades. These are facts, where is nothing more to discuss about which kind of government is better in my opinion. Anyway, opposition has to be in politics. I don't want to say, that all what conservative governments are doing is good. But it seems they are doing more things well than the socialist governments. Hannes

not in England Hannes, every conservative government we have had since the 1970's has destroted industries, communities, hope, self worth of the working man, and in David Cameron we have a posh public school boy who was born to multi millionaire parents who seems to have an inbred hatred of all good, decent hard working normal people, to raise revenue for our massive financial deficit he taxes and penalises the normal family so they cannot afford to live while looking after his fellow multi millionaire friends. In the 1970's we had a mining industry to be proud of until the conservative government under the witch Maggie Thatcher decided to punish us for bringing down the previous conservative government under Ted heath, the result of her vindictivness was 150,000 job losses, destroyed communities and moral that 30 years later have still not recovered, do they care, of course not as they never leave thier gold lined ivory towers, they only venture into the real world at election time when they want votes. My great grand parents, grand parents, parents and myself and my brother were all coal miners, I myself am a qualified mine official, all gone, all destroyed, they might be doing a good job in Germany but in England all they do is destroy.

too true dunc In england they find any way and every way of taxing the public. They say that we are lucky to have a national health service. You go to hospital in england and end up with M.R.S.A. Try and get an appointment with a doctor..... You have better odds at winning the lottery.

Due to taxes and economy / industry it seems the conservatives in England are doing what the socialists in Germany are doing.

I'm very dismayed to hear this attitude here on a science forum. Since when is investment in science a bad thing? Do you realize that this money will fund tens of thousands of jobs in Europe? What about all of the companies that supply products and services for this tech? The money spent at CERN is a waste? Please elaborate how.
The titanium and rocket fuel does not magically appear and this money is not heaped into a pile and burned. Entire industries are funded with this investment, but if you believe this is a bad idea then please suggest a better use of the money.

Chris < If I was French President, I would use those 338 millions to improve the Delias and Agrias collection of Paris Museum...
Can't see a better use...
