Animal Planet showed a show some years ago called "Buggin with ruud". One of the episodes he went to PNG in persue of the queen alexandra birdwing. There they show some live photage of it, and it even lands on his head(dont know if it was staged)
I can't seem to find the clip on youtube or anywhere else, but the episode is called: Buggin with Ruud: Papua New Guinea - Island of Giant Bugs

Welcome to the forum froggy. A lovely video of one of the worlds most magnificent butterflies. I found that video clip a short while ago but it is good to see it again. I should very much like to see that footage that wolf has mentioned. It always amazes me that no Natural History film maker has ever gone to New Guinea to make a longer film of this species and its disappearing habitat. Especially as it is so spectacular and so endangered. At the rate its rain-forest habitat is going, it might in the future be too late. This species could easily be filmed at Voivoro where it was photographed by Matsuka for his Natural History of Birdwing Butterflies. At the right season this magnificent butterfly leaves the high tree tops and visits the Hibiscus flowers the villagers gardens. Below are two photographs from the Matsuka book taken at Voivoro that some of you might not have seen as his superb book is rather expensive to say the least. Peter. Attachments:

Nomad, Thank you for the welcome and for the images. I have been looking at and enjoying the forum for a few years but did not post until now. I very much liked the post that you started on "my favorite Ornithoptera specimen". Birdwings are such miracles of nature, and what an amazing variety of forms! I used to collect as a young kid, but now I am much more interested in collecting images. And some day I hope to go see the mythical Alexandrae live in their environment (its on my bucket list ) Here's one of the Alexandrae male images I found on the net this past summer. It is a bit over-exposed but still very stricking. Cheers, Thierry Attachments:

Here's hoping that if I can ever afford it, one day I will. Peter.

Another nice Ornithoptera video (O. Tithonus misresiana pair). Looks like lady Tithonus got tired of waiting for her suitor to make his move There are similar videos on the Cornell U. site. Enjoy all... Thierry macaulaylibrary.org/video/469120

Peter,
There are 6 more videos on that site (search Tithonus Birdwing to access). There are clearly several different butterflies in the various movies. Timothy Laman must have found a very good spot for Tithonus watching. As an aside I got my PhD from Cornell U. so this makes me a proud alumnus ;D
