The is a TV show that aired on the discovery channel about Africa. Researchers found in the state of Mosambique an unexplored tropical jungle. When they got there they found many butterflies. They saw butterflies flying up the river beds and later found that they were headed to near by Maboo Mountain. The male butterflies came there to dance in the open space above the mountain to impress females. The fastest and hiest fliers find a female partner. The narrator said the butterflies dance for only two weeks a year for one half hour every morning. What an assume sounding place!!

Bluemoth I saw this remarkable footage on the David Attenborough's wildlife documentary series Africa, episode the Cape. The butterflies, I believe mostly Nymphalidae, Genus Charaxes were filmed high above the pristine rainforest on Mt Mabu, where as you say, they went for space to do their truly amazing courtship display. It was truly a surreal experience watching this and I do not think I would have believed it, if I had not watched it for myself. This stunning footage can be watched by following the link below and searching Cape, Africa. The butterfly footage can be seen about 10min from the start of the episode and is well worth watching. I believe a number of new butterflies have been recently discovered in the Mt Mabu rainforest. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search?Q=cape+Africa

Yes it is annoying, but only UK residents pay the TV licence which provides the funds for the programming, so only UK residents can view the content online.
Adam.
