That's what I thought too. And it's probably impossible to identify this weevil(?) from such photo.

I presume this weevil is dead and as stated above a fungus has killed it and one of the symptoms is that the weevil (the host) crawls to an exposed area or high point just before it dies where the fungus fruits and spreads its spores. A similar fungus is bieng isolated which is specific to locusts and it too has a fruiting body, but its not as spectacular a this.

It's a poor angle, but based upon what I can see of it. It seems to be a species in the genus Hilipus. If the angle had been better I would have been able to nail it to species. Jeff Prill
