Okay, I've started getting my supplies to start my collecting venture, including a few riker mounts. Most of them come with the standard cotton background but I've seen some professional mount jobs that have parchment over the cotton to give it a cleaner look. Is this more difficult to do? And what kind of paper would be safe to use? Meaning, could I just buy paper from the store that I like and use that or is there something about that paper that would be harmful to the insect?

Unbuffered acid-free paper comes in many forms, types. What i used for papering field collected specimens in for decades, some are up to 50 years old now, specimens as fresh as the day caught. FWIW

Are you asking about placing paper over the fiber filling in the Riker Mounts or are you asking about removing the fiber filling and placing paper over the bottom of the empty frame?
Boogtwo was referring to paper used to make envelopes for storing unmounted insects. In that case simply purchase glasssine envelopes from BioQuip or pads of glassine paper for folding your own envelopes. Each comes in various sizes.

Since the lady was talking Riker mounts where the specimens will be in contact with the medium... if she wants it covered I STILL recommend the paper.

Like boogtwo mentioned, I said riker mounts, the paper will be going over the cotton backing
