Is this Caligo superbus? The seller wasn't sure. It looks like it, but it also looks a lot like idomeneus. Also, why is the abdomen removed? I know male Morphos have abdomens removed to prevent greasing, but I've never heard of it with Caligos. My others all have their abdomens. Bradleigh Attachments:

Definitely not superbus. Your idomeneus id is correct.

Thanks. That was my suspicion.
The pictures of superbus do look similar, though. What are the differences? Possibly the undersides? I haven't seen the underside of superbus. This is slightly smaller than my other Caligos, so possibly size is a factor too.

As you can see from the picture provided above superbus has a much more distinct line in the forewing and the blue violet is much more intense in the hindwing. The ventral side is similar at first glance, but there are difinitive keys that can be identified for each. Overall I would say that idomeneus is a little larger than superbus, but as you know individuals can vary. I borrowed a picture from insect sale website so that you can compare it to your specimen to pick out the key features. Attachments:

I really suspected it was idomeneus. No problem though - all the Caligos are desireable in my opinion. Atreus is the one I'd most like to get.
