Hi people, I was interested in buying this book but before doing so, can someone tell me to which detail this book goes into please? For example does it tell you that a species flies on Mount Parnassus or it gives you more detail on which part of Mount Parnassus it is found? I am asking because I don't want to buy a book which is a summary of Tolman but added with beautiful pictures. Also, just in case, is there a better book on the Butterflies of Greece available? Thanks Jonathan www.satyrinae.yolasite.com/

Hi Jonathan
Not owning this book, I do not know how much detail L. Pamperis goes into when giving localities for the butterflies found in Greece. However the book seems to get excellent reviews and one lepidopterist mentions that Lazaros in his first edition was reticent to give even approximate localities for locations for some of the rarer species because illegal collecting is such a problem in Greece. However the new edition gives distribution maps, as well as the author's accumulated wisdom of many years in the field.
Pemberley books mentions that it covers all 234 species found in Greece with detailed species descriptions including photographs of the butterflies in their natural habitats, status, threats, distribution maps, chart showing altitude range. The book has 1765 colour photos with 766 pages. Also I believe the author has included habitat images.
This Lazaros sounds a pretty interesting guy. He was a mountain walker who has now dedicated his life to butterflies, spending all his free time exploring the Mountains and Islands of Greece, carrying a tent and sleeping bag without the use of a car. I hope this is of some help.

I had a visit to the Pemberley specialist bookshop at Iver UK today. There is nothing quite like it, full of all kinds of books on Entomology with very helpful staff. I had a look at the Butterflies of Greece by L. Pamperis, the author does not go into any detail about the localities of the many different species in Greece. The book certainly does not mention where to look on individual mountains. The distribution maps are really quite small. However it is full of wonderful photographs.

Thanks for your help. In the lack of a better book, I think I will go for it sometime soon. Jonathan
