A few years ago I captured some footage of one of Americas most beloved butterflies, the Diana Fritillary, (Speyeria diana). Here are both males and females nectaring on Milkweed. Sorry for some of the out of focus shots, I was just learning how to use this new camera. I just wanted to share some of the footage with my Insectnet friends, hope you enjoy it. Tom

Wow. These butterflies look like they are totally drunk. Where's the location?

Well Clark, in regards to their behavior, this is quite normal for this species. Speyeria diana, Speyeria cybele, and the Appalachian variety of Speyeria aphrodite (ssp.cullasaja), doesn't exhibit the nervous flittering behavior of most Western species such as Speyeria nokomis. Perhaps it has something to do with the Milkweed they have been feeding on ?! The location is in the southern Appalachians of Tennessee.

Well there were a few seenes of a butterfly that looked drunk. But it was overcast so that calms butterflies down just a bit. Looked like a White Baned Admiral joined them in the very last few seconds of recording - fun to see to.
