Hello, I am going to visit my friend in Guam next week.
I was wondering if there are any good butterfly or beetle in Guam.
Is it illegal to catch any insect in Guam?
Thanks!

As far as I know it is not illegal to catch insects in Guam. I actually have a male of Papilio polytes from there, and would very much like to see more specimens including females, so if you do catch some please send me some photos of the specimens after you spread them. In fact I would be interested to know what Papilionidae you find there.
Adam.

I spend one week in Guam a couple of years ago, didn't do any collecting though! You are aware that it is American territory, right? I agree with Adam, I don't think it's illegal either.

adamOkay! I will try to get Papilionidae for you. Let me know if you need other species. I can't find lot of information about beetles..so I will be focusing on the butterflies of Guam. @christof Yes, I know that Guam is a US territory. It's good to hear that collecting is not illegal in Guam! I am gonna bring some butterfly nets with me. I assume that local people's gonna look at me like I'm from the planet mars.

Nah, the locals are quite relaxed and laid back. They rather hang out in Burger King, actually. In any case it is always good advice to search for the leps on back roads, etc. and not along the main road.

My dad went there twice on work trips a couple years ago, did lots of collecting, and asked the "customs" agents whether or not it's okay to take specimens. They told him it's fine to collect anything from there EXCEPT the local subspecies of Hypolimnas octocula, which is on the US Endangered list.

@multicaucdata
Interesting! Thanks for letting me know about H.octocula. Do you also have info about the beetles of Guam?
@christof
hahaha burger king everywhere! I will be collecting in the tropical rainforest to catch variety of insects. I hope there aren't any dangerous animals like venomous snakes....

Most of the literature on Coleoptera was published in the Insects of Micronesia. The website Insects of Guam lists the publications. All you have to do is go to a library and find the volumes. Jeff Prill
