Interesting fact...the world's largest Mydas fly (from G. Beccaloni's book "Big Bugs Life-size") is Gauromydas heros from Brazil with a body length of 2 & 1/4" & a wingspan of 4 & 1/4"!! Your specimen from Costa Rica might be in the same genus?? Your's is just a baby!

It looks like a Mydid to me. Wing venation on these is pretty disticntive, but hard to see it in this pic. Doesn't really look like an Asilid at first glance.
It's not Gauromydas heros I don't think. I wonder if anyone actually has one of these.

To be clear:
According to G. Beccaloni's book ....Gauromydas heros is ONLY known from Brazil therefore dynastes23's specimen is probably not that but may be in the same genus?? (my speculation only).... no experts on Diptera out there?

I really can't say I've seen anything like this before. Of course, I've never really studied flies and such, but my only guess for now is some kind of Robber Fly.
