Some of the protected stag beetles of the Geodorcus genus are quite common, particularly on the West Coast of New Zealand and in Fiordland - although it must be remembered that most of Fiordland is a national park. However, as most of this group, superficially at least, are quite similar, the conservation authorities, have opted to take the easiest approach and protect them all. It should not be too difficult for DoC to work out the taxonomy - after all the world authority on these stags lives in New Zealand.
