I think it's E. sudetica inalpina Because 1) sudetica : in more then 80% of the highest red spot there is a black spot ! Concerning melampus < 1% has a black spot there! On your species I can see a black spot (on the right forewing) in the highest red spot . On the hindwings melampus has in most cases a bigger red spot in cell 4, sudetica has equal red spots (+-same size) Apparently melampus and sudetica never fly together in the Alps !

David

Hello, I can confirm David's opinion. I have checked the book "Die Erebien der Schweiz" by Peter Sonderegger. In this book there is a precise map of the Grindelwald region and the distribution of both species. Erebia sudetica flies around Grindelwald. You have to be North East of Grosse Scheidegg to find Erebia melampus.

Thanks guys. So I was on right side of Grosse Scheidegg as it was one of my target species at that time! I think that it was late in the season as that is the best specimen (in terms of quality) I got.
