My friend found this and I've been trying to ID it for her, but not having much luck. The picture is a little blurry, but hopefully someone can tell me what this is

It would help if you said where in the World your friend took the photo. Adam. Oops, sorry, I put it in the title but forgot to put it in the post! It's from Orlando, Florida. A little more info is that it was found on a tomato plant!

I know nothing of about florida sp. but this dos resemble closly a cut worm moth larva. Cut worm moths are in the noctude group made up of many sub families. See Moth Photographers Group web site. If you click on the photos of the moths you some times get photos of the larva. It would in deed be a long and dauhnting task for getting an I D. But I do not know of any other web site that consitrates on the display of just moth larva of the US.

it is a Cutworm, Peridroma saucia, Variegated Cutworm. It is a third instar (?)larva. It can vary in color from gray to brown to almost black. It is one of my favorites. I make moneriting Light Traps for this and other Cutworms. Bad for row crops. great for my business.
