I got a few individuals allegedly Stichophthalma neumogeni neumogeni from insect-sale. Collecting data - China, GuangXi, Guilin. wingspan 95-98 mm. photo attached but I have my doubts whether certain species. May be this is subspecies of Stichophthalma howqua - - there are a lot of black coating on the back wings and the large size. I also have one Stichophthalma neumogeni from other location - sichuan province. it differs from this new - smaller and less black on the back wing. new butterfly is really Stichophthalma howqua ?? Looks like howqua to me, neumogeni doesn't have a series of spots on underside of forewings, only 2 well separated spots, it should be s.sp suffusa but it's not a heavily marked specimen, a lighter form, I think I have similar, I'll post photo tomorrow if I get the chance.

These I bought as Stichopthalma Louisa Louisa, data chiang mai Where did you buy those from? I think that any specimens will have come from Wang Chin, Phrae Province, not Chiang Mai. Adam.

I think so, from photos of the recto surface anyway, it does have characteristics of Louisa and was and occasionally still is classed as a sub species but the underside of yours compaired to those of mine from either Thailand or Laos are totally different.

Stichopthalma louisa is very common in Wang Chin, where there are commercial collectors who take specimens to sell in Chiang Mai. There are no modern records of S. louisa from Chiang Mai, and certainly not anywhere where there are commercial collectors. In fact there are no commercial collectors in Chiang Mai at all now, except for a few in Fang, and Stichopthalma louisa does not occur there.
I think it is highly likely (in fact almost certain) that a dealer in Chiang Mai sent the specimens to Insect-Sale, who put "Chiang Mai" on the data label. I remember similarly some years ago seeing Papilio bianor stockleyi for sale with data "Chiang Mai" (not on Insect-Sale) for exactly that reason. Of course this butterfly actually comes from Umphang, Tak Province, nowhere near Chiang Mai.
Adam.
PS. Stichopthalma louisa from Wang Chin is quite variable, I know one dealer some years ago was selling the unusual forms for a much higher price than the common ones. I seem to remember that he told me some had red basal area, some brown, and some very dark maroon.
PPS. These specimens are all now illegal at least in Thailand and the USA, as all Stichopthalma are protected by Thai law.
