This is a caterpillar, about 5 cm in length, found in an acacia-like bush in Laguna Atascosa, Cameron County, TX, November 18 in the middle of the day. Not the only one in the plant at the time. I presume it is an Arctiidae. Thanks

The plant looks like a species of hackberry, probably C. pallida. The larvae is an Arctiid for sure, probably in the genus Spilosoma. Most Arctiids are generalist feeders, so there isn't much significance in what it is feeding on in this case. I bet if you would have searched for the larvae, you would have found them all over a lot of different plants in the area.
