From time to time I get offers from "Li Jingke" who offers bugs from Vietnam, Laos, China, etc. It seems like he has been out there doing bugs for quite sometime. Do any of you have any experiences or feedback regarding him? Every once in awhile he has some interesting offers. Thank you for your input!

He is a DATA conman. There was a whole series of different threads about him on the old Insectnet forum and various nefarious activities of his, which resulted in him being banned from advertising on Insectnet. After that he started using fake names or borrowing the names of Lao relatives - he lives much of the year in Vientiane with his Lao wife. These ads were easy to spot as they used the standard Li Jingke format.
Basically he has regularly been found to put fake data on common specimens from one place in order to sell them at a high price as coming from somewhere much more interesting to collectors. For example he took $5 Papilio krishna from Sichuan and sold them at $30 each as coming from northern Laos. I examined some specimens and they are identical to Sichuan specimens rather than nearby N Vietnam or the Yunnan subspecies. In reality there are no suitable habitats for Papilio krishna in northern Laos and it does not occur there. At the same time he was also selling Papilio bootes from N Laos, but these were also Sichuan specimens, quite differnet from real Laos Papilio bootes.
A Cicindelid researcher bought specimens from across Asia, but when they were analysed for DNA they all turned out to be from the same population!
A friend of mine bought a lot of Qinghai Satyridae, but after they arrived they were all clearly the common Sichuan species. There are many other stories around, maybe some other people will post them here too.
If you only want specimens for framing, and don't care about the data, then there's no real problem, but if you do care about data I recommend that you avoid buying from him at all.

Adam, I really appreciate the response. My interests with him are two fold. Bugs for my frame line are of course an interest but I am also a serious collector so I was looking at some of the Papilio species that he offered and as you mentioned data is vital. Your feedback is exactly why I posted here.....Thank You!

if you have any interest in the scientific value of the specimens in your collection then you should give this guy a miss as his data is pure fantasy, see previous posts from disappointed customers.

Why support someone's dishonest tactics in the first place? Better to deal with reliable. decent suppliers instead.

There's even more to this guy, he is one to steer clear of. You don't want your name appearing on the same piece of paper as his.

He sent me some specimens that he claimed were from Laos, but they weren't. They were from North East China. Don't order from him, unless you want bad data. Jeff Prill

Yes, he is originally from Liaoning Province, NE China, so it is very easy for him to get specimens from there and change the data. He has also sold material supposedly from northern Burma, but which he bought from a local dealer in Chiang Mai for resale. The dealer told me herself that she sent specimens to Li Jingke. Funny that soon after receiving the parcel he was advertising Burmese material for sale.

I just received an email that probably some members received too from LI Jingke's family informing he passed away. He was probably one the first to propose and open the Oriental market and played a role in entomology through this action.

Sorry to hear of his death. Also I feel sorry for his family as his tombstone will be very expensive. It will need to be at least 50 feet in height to accommodate an epitaph that includes all the aliases he used.
