What kind of flying insect is this?

I believe what you've got there is a little Carpenter Bee/Wasp problem. These insects bore holes in wood (furniture in your case) to make nests. Your brother's bedroom might have a nest somewhere. Don't worry, though. These insects don't live together in large numbers, so you won't find yourself pitted against a deadly swarm.
