I was hoping some of you beetle guys can direct me to some good online ID sites for Eastern US coleoptera? When I was a kid I did a lot of local broad collecting before focusing on anything particular. I still have all the specimens with collecting data, I just don't have ID's on some of them. I've exhausted my ID options with cheap field guides here, and don't plan on spending hundreds on proper ID books since they would be of little use to me later on. I feel its important to give this portion of the collection the proper respect since it is what got me started. Thanks for any help! Greg

Ross H. Arnett,Jr.PH.D.and N.M.Downie, The Beetles of Northeastern North America.Vol 1 and II. The SandHill Crane Press, Publisher An American Insect Project. Gainesville, Florida. Google Sandhill Crane Press and see if they have copies of it. Another source might be Entomological Reprint Specialists--online. Or, you could go to a local University and search Coleopterists Society and other journals for papers and copy them out. Most of my library is from photocopies. Jeff Prill

An excellent book for identifying the cerambycidae of the eastern USA is "Illustrated Key to the Longhorned Woodboring Beetles of the Eastern United States" by Steven Lingafelter. Unlike many other beetle ID books, it has color photos of almost all the species covered. It is available from the Coleopterists Society.

Greetings, For Cerambycidae, the on-line site "New World Cerambycidae Catalog" is useful, but you need a basic knowledge of the group to find things as they are organized taxonomically. Here's the link apps2.cdfa.ca.gov/publicApps/plant/bycidDB/wdefault.aspFor general on-line identifications, I'd also highly recommend the site mentioned by nosorg - www.bugguide.netHappy New Year!
