I asked an artist friend if she would mind painting me an unseasonal M.arion on a Christmas decoration to hang on my tree this year. She did a lovely job, I think. So I shall be commissioning some more butterfly baubles next year. Any suggestions on species? Should I stick to my dearly beloved lycaenidae, or include some of those brash nymphalidae?! How about L. dispar or L. phlaeas, they are sure to stand out.

Both very much on the cards. I was wondering whether to ask for a snowy ab.Schmidtii! And then there are the glittering delights of P.coridon and P.bellargus... Ah-ha! Inspiration. How about a nice female C.argiolus sat on... holly! What could be Christmassier than that?

Neat idea! How much $$ were you charged?

£15 including packing and postage - which I thought was very reasonable for a unique, hand-painted and infinitely reusable piece. And no worries about museum beetles!
PM me if you'd like me to give you the contact details of Sally (my artist friend). She's done a lot of butterfly illustration in the past, and comes from a family with a super-impeccable place in the history of British lepidoptery, which makes the work she does that bit more special and cherished.
