Now that the Winter Olympics are over in Sochi, I can't help but reflect on the games. I have always enjoyed the downhill skiing events. Ted Ligety won two gold medals, and I know he is proud to earn them. I also enjoyed the snowboarding events, particularly the downhill races. Germany and Norway did quite well in other events, and France swept the podium in the men's downhill ski race. I watched some of the figure skating events, and was rather impressed by the Russian couple, even though the US couple won gold. I actually managed to catch some of the women's biathlon, but I'm not sure who got the medals, (might have been Austria, and Germany)? The Olympics should be an inspiration to the rest of the world. It is a reflection of the human spirit, that we can co-exist, even in peaceful competition without butchering one another.

Beetlehorn- you sure are the optimist and I admire you for it. Call my cynical, but my favorite part is the closing ceremonies. I used to enjoy the Olympics more when I was a kid. These days it reminds me to much of other professional sports. Whiny pompous athletes, lousy commentators that spend more time trying to interject their opinions, some athletes are starting to seem like free agents with countries fighting over them, and an overall feeling that the flash is more important than the ability.

I know, it's hard to have a positive perspective on anything we see on tv these days. It seems like every time I watch the news most of what I see and hear is negative dialog. I guess that is one of the many reasons I enjoy my insect collecting activities, (an escape from all the bad stuff we are exposed to each day). I suppose the competitive attitude of some athletes, and trainers can affect the way they see others in a negative way. Example the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding drama in 1994, my god has it been 20 years ago?!?.

I know it won't mean anything to the Americans amongst us but I reckon the very best of sport was on display at Twickenham on Saturday. Two teams trying to knock lumps out of each other and giving their all for their respective countries. I was lucky enough to be there; the atmosphere was incredible and both teams and their fans were effusive in their praise for the opposition; it just shows that you don't need lots of scrores to have a classic match. I think the whole day was epitomised by Joe Launchbury at the final whistle; he was so exhausted by giving his all for his country that he wasn't even able to celebrate the victory but just crouched their trying to get his breath back. It wasn't until some of the Irish players came to congratulate him that he was able to respond.

I too love rugby union Bob, all the egotistical, overpaid, overhyped football players should watch in shame at the sheer effort that these guys put into a game, no gamesmanship at diving and trying to win by cheating, great to behold, my number one sport though is and always will be cricket.

Hockey is by far my favourite event. We had a bit of a water crisis here yesterday... the guys fixing our septic tank also managed to sever a pipe coming out from our water storage barrels, so coupled with dry season, we are practically out of water... despite all that we still managed to trek our way to the UN compound and watch the gold medal game. Our Canadian boys sure made me proud!

Biathlon is one of my favourites. Ole Einar Bjorndalen becoming the most winning winter olympian in history made me proud to be Norwegian! Also enjoy hockey and the slopestyle/halfpipe skiing/snowboard.

My favourite winter sport is Biathlon. Nice to see the legend that is Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway take a gold in the sprint race and another in the mixed relay. His new love ? Daryl Domracheva, the beauty from Belarus, took a amazing three individual Golds and what about the Frenchman, Martin Fourcade who took home two individual Golds and a silver. Nice to see the Russian team take the Men's Relay and Ukraine the women's relay. Well done to all. Away from Biathlon, it was great to see some success for the British team.

I'm with you on that one Dunc! My favourite sports are rugby union and cricket - proper cricket, not that 20 over nonsense; I can't abide watching the prima donnas that play football. I guess that rugby just edges if for me as a spectator sport, but I certainly enjoyed playing cricket more than any other sport. Bob

My favorite Winter Sport: A good old snow ball fight. While working at the University of Kentucky in 2010, I was walking to my vehicle when I noticed a massive snow ball fight near some dorms. Could not resist. Fire away.
The last snow ball fight that I was part of was in the 1970's.
