What's the difference? Is it the same butterfly called 2 things? This is two different sub species of amydon although they look similar.

I still think they look the same.
But I do see both of them a lot on ebay and dealers recently..there must be breeding source
Right now males still go over 150$ , but it could go like A.amydon zenodorus where you can get a male for 50$ if enough of them flood the market
I find the Blue patches much brighter than other Agrias species with blue hindwings, making it one of the most beautiful of all the Agrias (to me even more beautiful than the blue/red A. narcissus) A. narcissus looks duller in poor lighting by comparison

What's the difference? Is it the same butterfly called 2 things? Good question. smalli is from Panama - philatelica is from Costa Rica northward to Mexico. To me it seems likey that "red smalli" are simply philatelica caught in Panama. John

philatelica and smalli both flies together in Costa Rica in the same location. My friend who lives temporarily in Costa Rica has specifically assured this fact.
So philatelica is nothing but the red form of ssp. smalli (smalli has priority over philatelica).
Btw, the red amydon-subspecies from Mexico is ssp. lacandona

Makes sense .I'm looking at 2 sellers on ebay selling stuff from Costa Rica. One "smalli" red and one philatelica. I can't tell them apart again and the underside is the same
