This is purported to be a Vespa mandarinia. It seems to not have stripes as I thought that species did. Also can't tell how big it is - the frame is 5" x 5" but I don't know if that is from the outside edges or just the usable area inside the frame.

Some of the mainland V. mandarinia subspecies are very dark with very thin or almost non-existent stripes. V. mandarinia noblis is the biggest and can be up to one third bigger than the Japanese form.

Your picture does look like a genuine V. mandarinia.
