Does anyone know if mosquito/bug repellant has any effect on butterflies/moths? I'll admit my ignorance to the mechanics of something like DEET or Permethrin, so that's why I ask the question. Basically, just wondering whether or not I should be slathering myself/my clothes in the stuff before going out to hunt.
Thanks, Tom

I don't know, but I'd sooner miss a few butterflies than get bitten, especially in a malarial area.
I've found that even with repellent the mosquitoes will still land on you but as soon as they "taste" it through their feet they'll fly off without biting, so it shouldn't have any effect on butterflies.

Permethrin is an insecticide, not a mosquito repellant as far as I know.

Bob That's true ! I never noticed any effect on butterflies around me when I wear the insect repellent.

Yes, it's a contact insecticide that is normally effective for about a week and is harmless to humans.
True mosquito *repellents* don't kill them, they are either unpleasant to mosquitos or act by stimulating the nervous system to continue flying, and they are thus unable to land on you.
Adam.
