Hello all, Of the Dynastini, Chalcosoma specimens love to give me the hardest time. I bought 3 specimens on eBay a while back that I believe have to be wrongly identified. They were all labeled as "Chalcosoma atlas kirbyi" I believe that the collect location is likely incorrect also because it is consistent with the three specimens and they seems to differ too much. In the photos, I listed the data including size. The first two specimens I do not have the slightest clue about. The second one is odd to me due the the very matte look of its head. The head is quite similar to the matte look of chalcosoma moellenkampi's head. The last 2 I feel like a have an idea but could easily be wrong. I'm guessing the 3rd one is a small Chalcosoma atlas mantetsu. The last one did not come in that same group and I think it is a Chalcosoma atlas keyboh but just want to run it by everyone also. I really appreciate any help. Thanks, JW

These are all classified as Chalcosoma Atlas Keyboh. Which is from Sumatra and surrounding smaller islands. You can get variations in colouration from gloss to matt black all over or just the head. Also you have different horn developments showinf minor and major males.
Chalcosoma Atlas Mantetsu is only found on mainland Asia like Thailand, Vietnam, Laos etc etc.
Chalcosoma Atlas Kirbyi is correctly listed as Chalcosoma Atlas ab. Kirbyi as it's not a valid subspecies as it's an aberration/form usually given to minor males with the forked horn before developing the adult horn development.

There can be that much variation in minor males of such similar size? For them to all be only a few MM's different in size at most and for two to lack an apical tooth while the other two have it strongly defined makes it odd that they would all be C. a. keyboh.
