Well next week the Scots vote whether or not to break away from the U.K. If they do then the U.K as a term will be obsolete. In a way I hope they do.

There's still Wales and Northern Ireland in the UK even if Scotland does leave. Whatever the Scots decide it's going to be interesting.

K.!! the problem is more extended as more regions in Europe tend to become more independant (Flanders, Cataluna, nothern Italy, etc.) and Scotland will be a kind of starter. Note that it concern only "rich" regions ! and none of them intend to leave E.U. !

Well Ireland is an independent country, it is only the Northern part that belongs to the U.K. Because of the many years of the troubles between the catholic and protestant peoples of that country they certainly will not be breaking away. All those years of war in Northern Ireland were about the IRA wanting a united Eire. Well, if Scotland do go it alone, we still have NI and Wales, the latter at least for the time being. But without the top bit, Scotland, we will certainly never be a United Kingdom.
Peter.

In a recent inquiry made in Catalonia less than the 30% of their population wantto be independent,I think the problem is that their politicians want more money to spend.

As a 50% Scot I understand why many people want to vote yes, they have watched government after government, labour and conservative thinking that the only part of the UK they have to answer to is the London money men, watch corruption beyond belief, incompetance and greed, immigration out of control and have no say at all on any of it, only when Westminster see a profit crumbling before their eyes do they all fall on Scotland, probably for the first time, begging them not to leave, if Yorkshire could have a vote to leave England I would vote yes, the place is a shambles.

If we'd been given a vote in England I'd initially have voted to get rid of the Scots, they always seem to get favourable conditions and seem to be an ungrateful drain on England's resources. However, now everything has been fully debated, it seems to me that the only argument that matters is the economic one. If they vote yes, not only would it be an economic disaster for Scotland, but it would also adversely affect the economy of the remaining part of the UK.

yes, the place is a shambles. It made me laugh when all the leaders of our political parties recently trooped up to Scotland to give them their wisdom why they should stay in the U.K. I bet after the mega rich shiny faced Cameron stood up and gave his, at the end there were a few more YES voters. Oh shiny face, is more interested in Killing all the Badgers to keep those poor farmers happy than worrying about Scotland or all those terrorist Jihad fighters slipping in and out of Britain, they like our benefits, IS do not pay much. So much for the leader of the U.K. I have been to Scotland many times, in the past to search out its botanical treasures in their grey misty mountains. Well, what can I say but if the truth be known, they the Scots, lets put it nicely are not over fond of their neighbours the English. I will be surprised if the Scots vote for independence, you would think that after all these years of banging on about how dastardly the English have been, they would vote a resounding YES. I hope they do, but I got a feeling they might not, they know which side their bread is buttered on, as Bob has more eloquently put it. Peter.

In my opinion it is a good sign for democracy that the Scots are given the opportunity to vote. My knowledge of the situation is not good enough to advance an opinion, but from what I read in the newspapers, it made me skeptical that the banks and the "city" seem to be the biggest opponents of Scotlands independence.

To be fair, we get raped by this government anyway, so what will be the difference if the scotts go independent and find the price rises hard for the first few years? Let the scotts go, and then let's pull out of Europe, that way we can buy more missiles...It's on the news now that London and Manchester are wanting independence....

Change the names and you have New York state! Upstate conservatives would love to divest themselves of the corruption, greed, and regulations driven by NYC.

Very interesting to hear that people from different places in the world have the same opinion on the political situation in their country. It is quite similar here in Germany. The politicians seem to be employed by money men and large companies and just before elections they say start making big promises and pretend to be interested in the needs of the people. If it weren't so sad, you could laugh about it...
