Don't know about Scotland wanting to leave the UK, as an English man I'd leave England in a heart beat if I could afford it and there's a lot more than just me.

Change the names and you have New York state! Upstate conservatives would love to divest themselves of the corruption, greed, and regulations driven by NYC. Very interesting to hear that people from different places in the world have the same opinion on the political situation in their country. It is quite similar here in Germany. The politicians seem to be employed by money men and large companies and just before elections they say start making big promises and pretend to be interested in the needs of the people. If it weren't so sad, you could laugh about it... This is common worldwide. The big-city politicians tell the rural folks how much the big city subsidizes their advancement while in fact they get nothing they really value. Afghanis don't want NATO built hospitals and schools. Remote Fijians don't want the BS of Suva-based politicians. Upstate NY people are tired of being told how great NYC is while being taxed to death. Midwest America is annoyed at Washington DC gun laws. The Amazonian tribes want to be left alone, and Muslims and animists worldwide don't want the interference of missionaries. Why can't Scotland be autonomous yet integrated? That's how USA was supposed to be until Abe Lincoln's strong-arm tactics. Countries, like people, should enjoy the benefits of a relationship without domination.

Well it was a NO vote as I predicted. Probably the bribes and incentives from the main political parties to stay in the U.K tipped the balance. That means that we the English taxpayers will again foot the bill and give the Scots even more allowances, that we do not enjoy ; that a stronger Scottish parliament can now put in place. No wonder Salmond was looking very happy even in defeat, he is laughing all the way to the BANK.
Peter.

A friend of mine recently sold everything here in the UK and moved to the mountains in spain. He now owns a small farm house with 56 acres of land with 200 almond trees, an olive grove and grape vines. His water is tapped from the mountain stream and his electricity is from solar panels. What did all this cost him? a mere £26,000. he told me that his yearly rates were the equivalent of £36 per year. No wonder he's always happy when he rings me....

Hello Have to say that your friend found a real bargain. Such extension of land it's not that cheap normally. It must be a rural region very far away from any important urban area, so the price per ha is very low. Anyways Spain is not that good. I think we are EU top ranked in corruption. We have a deep economic crysis. We have the 1st or 2nd biggest rate of unenployment in UE. Lack of important advanced industries (except for a couple of regions, the main industry is tourism and construction), a health sistem wich was one of the best in the world now we are losing it, poor investment on education and scientific research ... A long etc, that doesn't make me feel happy or proud about the things that were done in my country the last decade or decades. Thank god we have good food, people, climate, landscapes, and a good number of entomological endemisms This said, although I do not share their opinion, it doesn't surprise me that we have here a similar independentist voices like in Scotland, with problems in Catalonia, basque country and Galicia in smaller grade. But in my opinion, in the 21th century, in a globalized world, we shouldn't be talking about splitting regions, or we will end like paleolitic humans, everyone fighting for his "tribe". Instead, we should be unifying the world in the biggest grade possible, and fighting some of the biggest problems it's facing, like hunger, lost of natural enviroments, contamination, wars, etc... Regards

Regards That is a great idea and was one of the basic ideas of the European Union. The problem are the humans themselves. Thats why the EU in todays form is not working. The integration happens way too fast and the political class in Bruxelles is ignorant and lives in its own "ivory tower" (as we say in Germany) far away from the reality of European citizens. That ignorance of arrogant people with ridiculously high incomes is the reason why there are so many movements in Europe like the Scottish or the Catalonians. People have the fear that their cultural identity will be destroyed for a world ruled by bureaucrats, global companies and the financial industry. TTIP is the best example for that...
