One of the most beautiful and rare species of Euphaedra. I've been looking for this for years. Also probably the first picture on the internet of a fresh specimen with good color Just off the spreading board

Not into Nymphalidae anymore, but this is a nice one.

Hopefully they discovered the spot where to catch this species and we see more of them available. This is the only fresh specimen I've ever seen for sale
Only slightly annoyed by the 2 small stains on the forewings. It's funny how the worst luck happens to rarest specimens. I've never had this happen in that area of the wings before and have no idea what I could have done to prevent it. But it's not too noticeable and can only see it on the picture.

"It's funny how the worst luck happens to rarest specimens"
I have found this in 35 years of collecting, it's a curse, all the common species come off the boards blemish free, but the rarities, forgot how many times I have used expletives over the years.

This curse or phenomenon to the only bilateral gynandromorph I've ever seen alive. It was an expupa, which got a water droplet on it. The droplet landed on the setting paper, I didn't think much of it, BUT. When I took it off the setting board a small piece of wing stuck to the paper and tore a hole in the hindwing, the only time this has EVER happened to me...a curse indeed!!!

I never celebrate after I get something on ebay for a decent price
The game is not over until it has shipped safely and off the setting board without mishap

You have indeed acquired a very nice pair of this butterfly species. Did you get them at an insect fair? I know if I had access to insect fairs that's where I would get such things for my collection. I would want them already spread so I could see all their details (as well as any flaws). I have a few rarities to my name but, I have only acquired them from old collections (being parted out) or through trades with other collectors. And this is because I live in the U.S. where insect fairs are largely non- existent . When it comes to purchasing expensive items I do not buy them papered. Too much risk involved for me in receiving the item un-damaged through the mail along with the subsequent trial of relaxation/spreading. As others have mentioned in this thread a myriad of problems can arise and do on seemingly (always) the pricy things. I have always been comfortable in spreading most leps however, pricy items are to me best when somebody else has taken that trouble and all you have to do is say yea' or nea' to purchasing it.

I bought male on ebay and female troughs insect.net classified. Both were bought as papered, I spread them alone. Yes, I agree, I would also do not buy more expensive butterflies papered, as nobody know exactly what is in... But I do not have too many very rare specimens in my collection... Euphaedras are now my priority and this species is very nice and very unusual. I do not think this is the rarest euphaedra species but one from hte most beautiful.

Here is my series of Euphaedra francina, they were found in an old collection, not perfect but I'm pleased to have them.

Dear inachisio, do you know locality for your wonderful E. francina? This is now very rare species and your specimens are very nice.

I will check and get back to you, I put a pair up for sale on ebay this week with a male of the even rarer bebearia arcadius but cancelled the auction before anybody bid, broke my heart to part with them, they came from an old collection from Watkins and Doncaster
