Hi everyone,
I am thinking of getting Talbot's classic work on the Indian region: Fauna of British India including Ceylon and Burma, Butterflies Vol 1 & 2.
It appears that apart from the original edition, there are reprints by Today & Tomorrow from at least the 1970's and from 2013. Does anyone have information on the different editions/reprints? Are there differences in the printing quality etc? How much should one expect to spend on the original edition?
Thanks in advance!
Tom

Ok, thanks for the advice! I suppose the original edition is the one to go for then!
Does anyone know how Wynter-Blyth's Butterflies of the Indian Region from 1957 compares with Talbot's work?

The Wynter-Blyth has more plates, but does not include montain species and some of the commoner skippers. There is also the Bingham book which is older ... It depends what you are looking for ? I have original editions of all of these if you have special questions !

I enjoy reading old books and just having them. In a way they reflect their era. I'd rather have an original than a reprint of course, but right now I have to prioritize the contents.
Do these volumes also cover the Andamans?
Michel, are your copies for sale?

Tom, both books include Andaman. My copies are not for sale, and I have none of these titles for sale in my shop at present ...
There is a specific book covering Andaman and Nicobar which is :
VEENAKUMARI K., & al. Butterflies of Andaman and Nicobar islands Port Blair, Central Agricultural Research Institute, 2008 ; In-4, iv, 186 pp.,

Very interesting. I was not aware of that. I only have some papers on the Andamans. Do you happen to know where one could get hold of a copy?

Apparently the book can be obtained by writing to the Central Agricultural Research Institute in Port Blair. The price is INR 1,500.

I will try writing the institute, the price is seems reasonable compared to $60. It was one of the co-authors who referred me there.
Does the book cover all the species from the Andamans?
As for the older books I think I will have to settle for Wynter-Blyth's volume for now..
Thank you Adam for posting the links to the Bingham volumes!

Adam, why always stopping the pleasure of reading old books ? Some people like me try to make a living out of the book business ... A+, Michel Sorry Michel There will always be people who would rather read a real book than a pdf anyway, and there's nothing like the feel and smell of a very old book. You can't really enjoy a pdf the same way as a book. I should really have said that Talbot is a much improved updated version of Bingham. Adam.

Although the printing and binding quality of this book is very poor, it seems to me that it covers all butterflies and skippers of Andaman and Nicobar islands. Some of the photographs are pretty bad, but early stages are covered in the book. For each and every species, you find : description, early stages, similar species, life cycle, larval food plants, flight period, distribution and status ...
