I woke up this morning and went outside in my backyard and found this interesting creature on the trunk of my willow tree. What a surprise! I am in southern California at 1,000 ft elevation. It looks like a genus Catocala larvae but there are no Catocala moths down this low in my area. I'm pretty sure it is a moth larvae of the genus Zale because I have seen the adults down here. Zale is indeed in the Catocaliniae group. Anyway, it kinda blew me away. The weird looks and all.
